My Style: The Seven Garments You Need For Your Summer Capsule Wardrobe

We’re about to break into the seasonal wardrobe changeover ready for summer, and like everyone else, I find that it’s the perfect excuse to go shopping. It just can’t be helped. There’s something exciting about it all, maybe it’s the chance to reinvent your summer style or it’s just the thought of all the new outfits coming your way. But sometimes we go overboard and buy too many things that will only be worn once and we always end up spending too much money. And it’s only ever something we notice when it’s too late. These things can change the excitement into something that proves daunting.

But contrary to what we all think, we don’t actually need an entire wardrobe of new garments to reinvent our summer style, just a few carefully selected items that you can mix and match throughout the season. This summer, I have carefully put together Seven Summer Staples that you need for your capsule wardrobe.

SEVEN TIMELESS SUMMER STAPLES WE ALL NEED IN OUR WARDROBE

1. The Lightweight Trouser

The weather in the UK can be extremely fickle, meaning we need to be prepared for it. And that is exactly where lightweight trousers come in handy. They’re perfect for the overcast days where you can’t quite get away with shorts but you don’t want to be wearing heavy jeans because you know that come lunchtime, you’re not going to be able to move because of the humidity.

  1. High Waist Twill Trousers, & Other Stories// £59.00
  2. Myra Linen Stripe Culottes, Monsoon// £36.00
  3. Ankle Twill Trousers, H&M// £34.99

2. The Tie Front

Garments with a tie front – or tie backs for that matter are great. You can dress them up and down and they have been popping up within fashion for years. And there are so many variations. You can get your hands on tie front dresses or playsuits, or even skimpy shirts that are perfect for wearing alone or laying with a simple white t-shirt.

  1. Tie Front Cami, Miss Selfridge// £12.00
  2. Tie Front Romper, Verge Girl// $92.00
  3. Peach Top, Reformation// $128.00

3. The Linen Dress

love a good linen dress. You can wear them anywhere and fit right in. Going to the beach? Don’t forget your linen dress! Exploring a city and want to stay chic? Linen dress it is. It’s starting to get unbearably hot at work? Wear. A. Linen. Dress.

  1. Linen Getaway Midi Dress, Free People// £88.00
  2. Linen Cora Tie Dress, Monsoon// £59.00
  3. Linen Crete Dress, Reformation// $218.00

4. The Espadrilles

The shoe that never gets old, literally. These have been dated back as far as the 14th century when they were first crafted in Catalonia. At first, they were created as a simple shoe, good for running errands but as the years have moved on, so has the shoe. Since being featured in the classic Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn, they have carried the name of being one of the chicest shoes in fashion.

  1. Jackie Sandal, Reformation// $98.00
  2. Bianca Slides, Tory Burch// £215.00
  3. Espadrille Wedges, Next// £38.00

5. The Woven Bag

The perfect beach bag. Or just the perfect bag in general. This classic bag makes all of our Parisian dreams come true in the best ways possible and has summer written all over it. You can add it to almost any outfit and you’ll become the epitome of the warmest season.

  1. Bondi Round Straw, Topshop// £28.00
  2. Malibu Woven Tote, Michael Kors// £315.00
  3. St Barts, hush// £75.00

6. The Denim Jacket

Among many of the 80’s trends to be making a comeback, denim jackets are one of my favourites, although part of me wants to argue that they never left. With so many different styles to choose from like the oversized boyfriend fit or faded, it’s not hard to integrate this into our wardrobes. The best thing? Despite this being a summer favourite of mine, especially on the colder days, it’s not seasonally exclusive. A jacket perfect for all year.

  1. Fleetwood Jacket, hush// £79.00
  2. Ditsy denim Jacket, Free People// £168.00
  3. Tasha Denim Jacket, Fat Face

7. The Sunglasses

It wouldn’t be a summer wardrobe article without including sunglasses. Not only are they incredibly important, but they’re now a huge part of our summer fashion. Depending on the style you choose, they can completely transform an old outfit into a newer, fresher one. Every year we are introduced to a style that becomes prominent for the summer. Last year we saw the rise of rose-tinted glasses, I wonder what it’ll be this summer?

  1. Carlina Glasses, Chloè// £265.00
  2. Mini Cats Eye Glasses, Topshop// £16.00
  3. New Wave 215, Saint Laurent// £230.00
